Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for PTSD

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) affects millions of people worldwide, with many struggling to find effective treatment. Traditional methods like therapy and medication can offer relief, but for some people they don’t fully resolve symptoms. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a lesser-known but promising option being studied for PTSD. A growing body of research — much of it in veterans — suggests it may offer hope to those who haven’t found success with conventional approaches. Let’s explore what the science shows about how Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy may support PTSD recovery.

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?

HBOT involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber. This allows the body to absorb significantly more oxygen than it would under normal conditions. The increased oxygen levels help support the body’s healing processes, reduce inflammation, and aid its ability to repair itself.

In the context of PTSD, researchers are studying how HBOT may support the brain’s recovery from the physical effects of trauma. PTSD often involves changes to brain function, particularly in areas related to memory, emotion, and stress response. By improving oxygen delivery to the brain and supporting cellular repair, HBOT may help address some of these changes as part of a broader recovery plan.

How Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy May Support PTSD Recovery

Supports Brain Function:

One of the areas of interest with HBOT for PTSD is its potential to support neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to reorganize and form new neural connections. After a traumatic event, PTSD can leave the brain “stuck” in a state of hyper-alertness. This can lead to flashbacks, anxiety, and other debilitating symptoms. By supporting the brain’s healing, HBOT may help it process and store memories and ease the intensity of PTSD symptoms.

Helps Reduce Inflammation:

Trauma can trigger an inflammatory response in the brain, which may further stress brain cells and worsen PTSD symptoms. HBOT may help reduce this inflammation, which could ease some of the common neurological effects associated with PTSD, including difficulty concentrating, sleep disturbances, and irritability.

Supports Healing of Damaged Tissue:

Traumatic experiences can be associated with damage in the brain’s tissue. HBOT may support the healing process by increasing oxygen supply to affected areas, helping them repair. This may support overall brain health and help ease PTSD symptoms that stem from tissue damage.

May Support Neurogenesis:

Research suggests HBOT may encourage the growth of new neurons (nerve cells) in the brain. This occurs in areas like the hippocampus, which is crucial for memory formation and emotional regulation. By supporting neurogenesis, HBOT may help strengthen the brain’s ability to cope with stress and trauma.

The Science Behind HBOT and PTSD

A growing number of studies suggest that Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy may have a positive impact on PTSD-related symptoms. The therapy is thought to help by increasing blood flow to the brain and improving oxygenation in areas that are often under-oxygenated in people with PTSD.

In a study with 35 veterans, 18 received HBOT and 17 were in a control group. After treatment, the veterans who received HBOT showed significant improvement in PTSD symptoms, while the control group showed no change. They also reported less distress and depression. Brain scans revealed better activity in key areas related to memory, emotions, and stress, along with improved brain connections. Overall, the study found that HBOT helped these veterans by improving their symptoms and brain function, especially those who hadn’t responded to other treatments.

Additional studies suggest that HBOT may also be beneficial for veterans whose PTSD hasn’t responded to other treatments. In these groups, HBOT has been linked to improvements in symptoms like intrusive thoughts, avoidance, mood problems, and hyperarousal. These improvements were also associated with better brain function and structural changes, observed through brain imaging techniques like diffusion tensor imaging (DTI).

This review examined the research on HBOT as a treatment for PTSD. It included eight studies with 393 participants, mostly military veterans. The treatment was associated with significant improvements in PTSD symptoms, with greater symptom relief linked to higher oxygen doses and pressure levels. Some participants experienced a reduction in symptoms such as insomnia, nightmares, and hypervigilance, all of which are common with PTSD. Overall, the authors concluded HBOT is a promising option for PTSD when carried out under the care of professionally trained HBOT staff.

What to Expect During HBOT Treatment:

During an HBOT session, patients sit or lie down in a pressurized chamber while breathing in pure oxygen. Each session usually lasts 60 minutes, with several sessions often needed to see noticeable improvements. Patients typically undergo 20 to 40 sessions, depending on their condition and how they respond. View our discounted package options here.

Most people feel relaxed during treatment, though some may notice temporary discomfort, such as a feeling of fullness in the ears as pressure increases. Side effects are generally rare, and the therapy is considered safe when administered under professional supervision.

Our center, located in Phoenix, AZ, is equipped with multiple hard-shell chambers able to reach the therapeutic pressures used in the PTSD research. Our HBOT staff are certified hyperbaric technicians who will help you before, during, and after your session. If you’re interested in becoming a patient, please fill out our new patient form and call the office at (602) 864-0304. We are open 5 days a week for HBOT and Red Light Therapy.

Is HBOT Right for You?

While HBOT shows promise as a supportive option for PTSD, it is not a one-size-fits-all solution. It tends to work best alongside other forms of treatment, such as therapy. It’s important for anyone considering HBOT to consult with a hyperbaric doctor beforehand to determine whether it’s the right choice for their specific needs. Dr. Kilcup meets with every potential HBOT patient to confirm whether the treatment is appropriate for them and to provide you with all the information needed to feel safe and well-informed during your HBOT session.

Red Light Therapy for PTSD – Extra Results!

While Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) has shown in research the potential to improve symptoms of PTSD by increasing oxygen delivery to the brain, reducing neuroinflammation, and supporting neural repair, combining it with Red Light Therapy (RLT) may further amplify these benefits.

Red Light Therapy, also known as photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to penetrate deep into tissues, supporting cellular energy production, reducing inflammation, and promoting neurogenesis.

When paired with HBOT, RLT may provide a synergistic effect in several key ways:

  1. Enhanced Cellular Repair and Mitochondrial Function – HBOT increases oxygen availability, while RLT stimulates mitochondria to produce more ATP (cellular energy). This combination may accelerate brain cell recovery and support neurological function.
  2. Greater Reduction in Neuroinflammation – PTSD is linked to chronic neuroinflammation, which HBOT may help address by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines. RLT may complement this by further decreasing oxidative stress and inflammation, supporting a healthier brain environment.
  3. Improved Cognitive Function and Mood Regulation – Both therapies are thought to support neuroplasticity and neurotransmitter balance, which are important for cognitive function, emotional regulation, and resilience in PTSD patients.
  4. Faster Symptom Relief – HBOT and RLT may work together to accelerate healing, potentially leading to quicker reductions in PTSD-related symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and brain fog.
  5. Support for Sleep and Stress Recovery – Many people with PTSD struggle with poor sleep and heightened stress responses. Red Light Therapy has been shown to support melatonin production and circadian rhythm regulation, making it a helpful complement to HBOT for overall recovery.

By integrating Red Light Therapy with HBOT, people with PTSD may experience a more comprehensive and supportive path to recovery.

This place is awesome. Dr. K is incredibly knowledgeable and willing to talk to you for as long as you want about how the tech works. Machinery is top notch. Assistants are great. Most importantly, he’s one of these rare doctors that is actually trying to help as many people as he can (as opposed to just push pricing), so the price point is extremely reasonable, and he offers significant discounts for package pricing. I’ve looked at a lot of different HBOT places and this is by far the best one. Also next to a major freeway if you’re coming from elsewhere. It’s about a 25 minute drive for me, and I plan to come 5 days a week.
