Real Patient Outcomes

These are real patients treated at our clinic. Outcomes documented and on file.

Case Study · Post-Surgical Recovery

Off opioid pain medication in 3 days. Fully healed in 4 weeks.

The patient: A woman in her late 50s, scheduled for total hip replacement. Standard recovery includes 2–4 weeks of opioid use, 6–8 weeks of NSAIDs, and limited mobility for months.

The protocol: 5 pre-operative HBOT sessions to pre-load tissue with oxygen, followed by 15 post-operative sessions starting within 24 hours of surgery. Each session: 60 minutes HBOT at 2.2 ATA with photobiomodulation at 660 nm and 850 nm.

Hip replacement healing progression at 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks with HBOT

Outcomes vary by patient. Standard recovery benchmarks per orthopedic literature. Photos published with patient consent.

Case Study · Stroke Recovery

He survived the stroke. Months into rehab, he still couldn't laugh and couldn't cry — present in body, absent in spirit. Conventional rehabilitation had run out of answers.

The patient: A man in his 60s, post-ischemic stroke. Despite extensive standard rehabilitation, the limbic-system damage had left him emotionally flat — unable to feel connected to the family sitting right in front of him.

The protocol: 40 HBOT sessions paired with photobiomodulation at 660 nm and 850 nm. The first 20 sessions ran at 1.5 ATA to safely reactivate dormant neurons in the ischemic penumbra; the second 20 advanced to 2.0 ATA to drive deeper neurogenesis and angiogenesis.

By the end of the protocol, his laughter came back. So did his tears. For the first time since the stroke, his family had him back — not just his body, but the person inside it.
Emotion returnedLaughter and tears for the first time since the stroke
40 sessionsCalibrated pressure progression — 1.5 ATA, then 2.0 ATA

Outcomes vary by patient and time since stroke. A functional medicine evaluation is included to identify and treat the underlying drivers of stroke risk.

How Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Works

HBOT dramatically increases oxygen at the cellular level. This up-regulates genes, stem cells, immune cells, energy, metabolism, detoxification, and repair mechanisms.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Science in 2026

A landmark study released in April 2025 by the University of Gothenburg has redefined our understanding of long-term healing. The study followed patients five years after their HBOT treatments and found that the ‘pronounced improvement’ in tissue repair and inflammation reduction was sustained over the entire 5-year period. This proves that HBOT isn’t just a temporary fix—it’s a permanent biological upgrade for damaged tissue.

The Crucial Importance of Oxygen

  • Energy Source: Our bodies need energy daily for tasks, growth, and healing. It comes from oxygen in the air we breathe and nutrients from food. These are converted into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a crucial energy molecule.
  • Obstacles to Oxygen Flow: Factors such as aging, chronic infections, injury, stroke, heart attacks or toxin exposure can impede oxygen circulation, leading to health issues.
  • Reduced Circulation: Compromised circulation results in less oxygen flow and results in inflammation, poor healing and chronic pain and illness.
  • Impact on Well-Being: Inadequate oxygen can hinder growth, healing, and overall wellness, potentially leading to the development of chronic diseases.

THE ROLE OF HBOT

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) comes into play by delivering oxygen to reach areas with reduced circulation. With HBOT, an environment is created that is more supportive of healing processes. By increasing the supply of oxygen in our bodies, HBOT helps us heal faster and repair more efficiently and can provide an optimal state for cells to regenerate.

I started HBOT and noticed immediate results. I’ve been dealing with inflammatory issues for the last 3 years and doctors have been treating me with medication which only exacerbated my symptoms. I’ve experienced better results with Dr. Darrell Kilcup than any other treatment I have had.

WHAT MAKES DR. KILCUP’S CENTER DIFFERENT

Most HBOT in Phoenix happens inside hospital wound-care departments or inside soft home chambers that don’t reach clinical pressure. We’re built differently — and the difference shows up in patient outcomes.

35 Years of Clinical Experience

Dr. Kilcup has been treating patients since 1991. HBOT, red light therapy, functional medicine, and chiropractic care under one roof — refined over three decades of clinical practice.

Hard-Shell Chambers, Clinical Pressure

Soft home chambers reach about a third of the pressure your body needs to heal. Hospital chambers reach clinical pressure but are reserved for emergencies and require weeks of waiting. Our medical-grade steel chambers deliver the same clinical pressure as hospitals — without the wait, the referral, or the emergency-only restrictions.

Same-Week Scheduling, No Referral Required

Healing doesn’t wait. Neither should you. Most new patients are in the chamber within a week of their first call.

Red Light Therapy

Two therapies. One synergistic effect. Keep reading to see how we combine them with functional medicine for full-system recovery.

The Healing Trifecta: HBOT, Red Light Therapy, and Functional Medicine

Healing isn’t one tool — it’s the right environment.

Most clinics offer one therapy in isolation. We combine three, because each one does something the others can’t.

Hyperbaric Oxygen floods your tissues with the oxygen they need to repair. At clinical pressure, oxygen reaches areas your bloodstream can’t normally serve — damaged tissue, scarred areas, regions of poor circulation.

Red Light Therapy activates the cellular machinery that uses that oxygen. Photobiomodulation stimulates mitochondrial function, so your cells can actually convert the available oxygen into repair and regeneration.

Functional Medicine identifies why your body broke down in the first place. We test for the underlying drivers — inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, nutritional gaps — so healing isn’t just temporary.

Together, these three work as a system. Oxygen delivered. Cells activated. Root causes addressed. That’s what makes recovery stick.

Frequently Asked Questions

Real questions from patients considering HBOT — answered by the clinical team that runs Phoenix's only independent hard-chamber HBOT clinic.

Safety & What It Feels Like

Is hyperbaric oxygen therapy painful or bad for your ears?

The most common sensation is pressure in your ears during the first 10–15 minutes as the chamber pressurizes — similar to descending in an airplane. Our technician is right outside the chamber coaching you in real time on simple techniques (yawning, swallowing, or gently blowing against pinched nostrils) to equalize the pressure.

Once pressure stabilizes, most patients feel nothing at all and relax, nap, or watch a show for the remainder of the session. Ear discomfort is temporary and manageable — it is not a reason to avoid treatment.

Can you get claustrophobic in a hyperbaric chamber?

This is the number-one concern we hear — and the number-one concern that disappears after the first session. Our chambers are large monoplace steel hard chambers with windows. You can see out clearly, and your technician can see you at all times. Two-way communication is always active.

These are not the narrow tubes or zippered inflatable bags you may have seen online. Patients who were nervous beforehand routinely tell us the chamber felt more open and comfortable than they expected.

What are the side effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

Temporary mild fatigue is the most frequently reported side effect, usually after the first few sessions as the body responds to increased oxygen levels. Some patients on longer protocols notice minor, temporary vision shifts that resolve after the protocol ends.

Severe complications like oxygen toxicity are extremely rare in a clinical setting because we operate within strictly regulated medical-grade pressures and session durations. Every protocol is calibrated to your specific condition — we don't run a one-size-fits-all pressure for everyone.

Preparing for Your Session

Can I bring my phone into the hyperbaric chamber?

Our chambers are pressurized with room air — you breathe 100% pure medical-grade oxygen through a mask inside the chamber. Because the chamber environment itself is room air, it is not the high-oxygen fire risk you may have read about with other chamber designs.

We do keep personal electronics out of the chamber for practical reasons, but you won't be bored. Sessions run 60–90 minutes, and our setup includes screens visible through the chamber window so you can watch movies, shows, or whatever you'd like during treatment.

What do you wear during hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

Wear whatever is comfortable. Because our chambers are pressurized with room air (not filled with pure oxygen), there is no special clothing requirement. You do not need cotton-only clothing, and you don't need to remove lotions, jewelry, or cosmetics.

Most patients come in wearing their normal clothes and are completely comfortable throughout the session.

Results & Technology

How many HBOT sessions does it take to see results?

It depends on what you're treating. For acute recovery — plastic surgery, joint replacement, sports injuries — patients typically see measurable improvement within 5 to 20 sessions.

For deeper neurological and chronic conditions — stroke recovery, traumatic brain injury, long COVID, chronic Lyme — the clinical research points to a 40-session protocol to permanently stimulate new blood vessel growth (angiogenesis) and trigger stem cell release.

We are open 6 days a week, and most patients complete sessions daily or 5 days per week. A 20-session protocol takes about 4 weeks; a 40-session protocol takes about 8 weeks. We'll build a schedule that works with your life.

What is the difference between a hard chamber and a soft chamber?

This is the single most important question to ask any HBOT provider.

Soft chambers (also called "mild HBOT") are inflatable bags with zippers. They typically reach only 1.3 ATA and use concentrated room air — not pure oxygen. The FDA approves soft chambers for exactly one condition: acute mountain sickness. They are not medical devices in any meaningful sense.

Our hard chamber is a medical-grade steel vessel that reaches pressures between 1.5 ATA and 2.0 ATA (and higher when clinically indicated). You breathe 100% pure oxygen delivered through a mask, which dissolves oxygen directly into your blood plasma and cerebrospinal fluid at concentrations impossible to achieve in a soft chamber — or by breathing oxygen at normal atmospheric pressure.

If you're comparing prices and one provider is dramatically cheaper, check the chamber. The difference in therapeutic effect between a soft chamber at 1.3 ATA and a hard chamber at 2.0 ATA is not incremental — it is fundamental.
