Functional Medicine’s niche is helping people with chronic health problems that traditional medicine has not been able to figure out. I love that about Functional Medicine, because I love to help people get to the root of their health issues! Common problems people have that are helped by functional medicine include Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Chronic Fatigue, Brain Fog, Hormone Imbalances, Cardiovascular Disease and the list goes on.
The secret to functional medicine is finding the root cause or causes that are responsible for chronic health problems. In this video I explain the BIG 3 root causes I look for in every patient. They are so foundational and common that I have never had a patient in which one of these causes was not present.
BIG DISCLAIMER
It’s REALLY important to point out that my typical patient has already cleaned up his or her diet. Typically my patients have done tons of research trying to figure out what’s causing their health problems, and diet has a huge impact on our health. So they’re not eating a lot of sugar, processed foods, gluten, etc., much of what the typical American eats every day. When I get a patient who is unaware of the damaging effects of these kinds of foods, I always address this with them first. If a person’s diet consists of junk it’s only a matter of time until they are sick.
Diet often has contributed to the three big root causes that I find in every patient. Making changes in the diet is always an important part of healing. However, most of the time diet alone is not enough to reverse the problems. This is where testing is so important to discovering the root causes of the patient’s problems.
