Dirty Dozen & Clean Fifteen: What You Need to Know

by Dr. Kilcup | Mar 3, 2025 | Articles, Diet

Eating healthy doesn’t have to be a costly endeavor—especially when you know which fruits and vegetables deserve a little extra investment. With the right guidance, you can make smarter choices at the grocery store, eat clean, and save money without sacrificing the quality of your meals. This is where the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen lists come in.

These two lists, created by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), are game-changers when it comes to making healthier and more affordable food choices. Understanding which produce items tend to hold the highest levels of pesticide residues (the Dirty Dozen) and which are generally safer to buy conventionally grown (the Clean 15) can dramatically shift how you shop—and help you stretch your food budget further.

What Are the Dirty Dozen and Clean 15?

The Dirty Dozen is a list of 12 fruits and vegetables that typically carry the highest pesticide residues. Since these pesticides are often used in conventional farming to control pests, they end up on the produce you bring home. Consuming these chemicals can have negative health effects, including hormonal disruption, developmental issues, and even links to certain cancers. When you prioritize buying organic versions of these foods, you are opting for a healthier, chemical-free choice.

Dirty Dozen: What can these Toxins and Chemicals cause:

On the flip side, the Clean 15 includes 15 fruits and vegetables that tend to have low pesticide residues, making them safer to buy in their conventional form. These items often have thicker skins or outer layers that protect them from pesticide exposure, meaning you don’t need to spend extra money on the organic versions. You can buy these conventionally grown produce items without worrying as much about pesticides, allowing you to save on your grocery bill.

Why Should You Care About These Lists?

  1. Save Money Without Compromising Health: Organic produce is often more expensive, but not every item requires the extra cost. By knowing which fruits and vegetables are most likely to be contaminated with pesticides (the Dirty Dozen), you can focus your organic budget on those and buy conventional options from the Clean 15 without the guilt. This balance allows you to cut costs where you can while still protecting your health where it matters most.
  2. Reduce Your Exposure to Pesticides: Pesticides are designed to kill bugs, but they also end up in our bodies when we consume them. Studies have shown that long-term exposure to these chemicals can cause a range of health problems, including hormone imbalances, neurological damage, and immune system suppression. For this reason, choosing organic for the Dirty Dozen (where the pesticide residue is most concentrated) helps minimize your exposure to these harmful substances, protecting your long-term health.
  3. Increase Your Confidence as a Conscious Shopper: Knowing exactly which foods to prioritize when you shop empowers you to make informed, intentional decisions. With the Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 lists in hand, you can confidently navigate your grocery store and know where to invest in organic produce, where to go conventional, and ultimately, how to eat better without breaking the bank.
  4. Simplify Your Grocery List: Deciding between organic and conventional can be overwhelming, but these lists simplify the decision-making process. By offering clear guidance on which foods are worth the extra cost and which can be bought in their conventional form, the Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 help streamline your shopping list and focus your spending.

How to Use the Dirty Dozen & Clean 15 Lists:

  • Prioritize Organic for the Dirty Dozen: If you’re on a budget, invest in organic versions of the Dirty Dozen. These foods are most likely to retain pesticide residues, so choosing organic ensures you’re eating the cleanest version possible.
  • Go Conventional for the Clean 15: These fruits and vegetables are generally safer to buy non-organic, so feel free to buy them in their conventional form. This allows you to get fresh produce at a more affordable price without compromising your health.
  • Mix and Match: You don’t have to buy everything organic. Use these lists to create a more balanced shopping strategy. Consider your personal health priorities, budget, and lifestyle to make decisions that fit your needs.

The Benefits Beyond Your Wallet:

In addition to the financial savings, eating with the Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 lists in mind helps you reduce environmental impact, as organic farming is often more sustainable and better for the planet. Supporting organic agriculture also supports farmers who prioritize responsible farming practices that protect soil health, water resources, and wildlife.

I have been using the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for the last few weeks and It has helped me so much. I struggle quite a bit with work related stress. When I'm in the chamber I feel completely relaxed, so much so that I can bring my laptop inside and work without stressing. The calmness I feel in the chamber lasts for the remainder of the day as well. I have found too, the more consistent I am with sessions throughout the week the better I feel. The office staff seems well trained in running the tanks too, so I feel safe. I see Dr. Kilcup as well for my brain and gut health. Until now, I don't think I've ever known what "normal" or "healthy" feels like. Thank you all, sincerely!

I am very grateful to have found Dr. Kilcup and be his patient for the last couple of years. He has helped me restore my health back after being exposed to toxic mold for years. He helped identify and treat all of my symptoms I was experiencing and address the root problem. I was looking for the right person who could help me heal with natural therapies and supplements and Dr. Kilcup was the perfect fit. Every appointment and session was necessary and one step towards all the progress I made. Dr. Kilcup is a great functional medicine doctor who was also an advocate for my own health and well-being. I never received any care or attention to detail from other Doctors in past experiences except with Dr. Kilcup. Anyone who is seeking a holistic path towards healing or improving their own health should see him.
